A warm welcome to a full day of introductory training in the web analytics tool Matomo, an increasingly popular alternative to Google Analytics in both the private and public sector. The course takes place via video conference.

The aim of the course

After the training, you should feel more confident in Matomo's interface and concepts so that you can start exploring your data with Matomo on your own. You should also have gained an understanding of what kind of tool Matomo is and how your organization should think when you start using Matomo. We will talk about web analytics on a general level and how to get started with Matomo.

Previous knowledge

You should have worked with web analytics before, you absolutely do not need to be an expert, but having looked at reports in e.g. Google Analytics is good for you to keep up properly.

The course is structured with a mixture of theory, exercises and discussions.

Part 1 - Introduction to web analytics

Why do we actually measure and how can we move away from drowning in numbers to creating valuable insights on which we can make decisions? We go through some basic concepts in web analytics that we will use during the day.

Part 2 - What is Matomo?

Matomo is a system that unlike, for example Google Analytics, needs to be installed. An important advantage of this is that with Matomo we can carry out web analysis that is GDPR protected if it is set up correctly. There are a lot of things you need to take responsibility for in Matomo and we go through this in this section. We will also tell you about plugins in Matomo and how it affects the possibilities.

Part 3 - Concepts in Matomo

Here we talk about the basic concepts such as pageviews, visits and events. We also compare with Google Analytics.

Part 4 - How does web analytics work?

In order to understand the over-all picture better, this part contains a slightly more technical explanation of how the web analysis works. How do we collect data and how is this data then managed in Matomo?

Part 5 - Matomo basic interface and reports

We go through the most common reports and explain how you can customize the interface to twist and turn your data, for example by selecting different time periods or segments. We go through the various reports like: Visitors, Behaviour, Acquisition. We also look at how you can switch visualizations and export data from Matomo.

Part 6 - Segments and dimensions

We explain and test the concepts/functions segments and dimensions in Matomo.

Part 7 - Goals

We create goals and look at the reports that exist and how we can read these numbers.

Part 8 - Reports and dashboards

We create reports and dashboards.

Part 9 -  Questions and roundup of the day

Here we summarize the day and answer questions that came up during the day
